The Review

A well-written coming of age meets literary adventure story with a theme focused on nature and it’s placed in man’s growing world, “Togwotee Passage” is a fantastic read with a full cast of characters readers will instantly connect with. The sad yet familiar story of a young child growing up in an abusive environment and forced to begin anew after a particularly explosive event hurls the readers into a new chapter of the protagonist’s life that changes their interaction with the world from that point on.

The friendship between Calan and Derek throughout their expanding lives gave a deeper sense of connection with the overall theme of the novel as well. The emotional growth of these two characters as they took on life and watched as the world of man began to encroach on the natural world as a whole, perfectly illustrating the personal journey the protagonist underwent as a whole.

Togwotee Passage is a story that looks deeply into the natural order of the world and how modernity can threaten life. I greatly enjoyed the way Calan’s story was told. Rather than following him closely from beginning to end, the reader appears in Calan’s life for important moments that influence or show his connection to the wilderness he grew up in and the lessons it taught him. The moments of classic narrative such as the complex relationship Calan has with his family, the struggles of growing up, falling in love, friendship, school, work, finding purpose, all serve to give the story a structure that is enjoyable and holds together the meaningful and thought-provoking ideas that the story delves into. The details and personal feeling stories that fill this book left me unsurprised when I discovered that the author shares many of the same experiences as his central character. It is obvious that this is an important and personal story that makes connecting to it easy. I also really enjoyed the extra details given to the story the images were interesting, the quotes powerful, and the footnotes extremely helpful. My favorite element of this book was the friendship between Calan and Derek. Not only does it serve for allowing Calan a deeper understanding of Shoshone culture and ideology, but the relationship feels strong and natural. I also liked that their conversations, while heavy in philosophical thought, also have a lightness in how the two joke with each other throughout their lives. There are moments when the language becomes dense as it conveys meaningful information which occasionally makes the dialogue feel unnatural. The book's focus is also on Calan’s connection with nature and that takes precedence over action, relationships, and description. I also found it a little jarring when the narration shifts from third to first person. However, I did enjoy that this shift allowed for several new points of view to add to the story. Overall, I found this an interesting and enjoyable read. I would recommend it to those interested in coming of age stories and the human connection with nature.

From his childhood to his old age. Author has written this book to tell the readers that respect the natural resources and also protect the animals. Dont kill animals for a hobby but for survival. Calan while staying with his aunt he learnt that the natural behavior of animals like wolf eating the sheep and goat should not be harmed. If they are creating nuisance then the wolf should be dealt with. Calan use to not understand her aunt and uncle when they use to say that it the way it is. Calan understands the meaning of natural resources when he goes for trekking with his friend drek. Where drek makes him understand the life of a shoshone tribe to which derek belongs. Calan while living in city gets very uncomfortable with the way of the city where people dont respect the natural resources. While his small stunt as a crew member of a photographer while traveling in a car a bit tarantula is seen in the drivers thighs to which calan tries not to harm it and throw outside the window. One narration is exceptionally good that is while derek his friend goes to visit a doctor for his health issue. He sees a owl in the day light and is little surprised to see that owl. When doctor informs him that he has leukemia, then derek tells him that while visiting calan his dog was very sad and was upset while derek was living. So he gets to know that animals know things before hand that his human counter part is suffereing from something and also the owl has come to inform him about his health.while in his old age while going in rounds with his dogs in the woods. A young lad shoots a grouse and also his dogs which is done only for his pleasure. The last chapter is phenomenal to read as it makes us understand many things related to the living things in this world. Overall i would say good refreshing story of natural resource and a Goodread.. :) 258

Fun read. Different from what I would normally read, but good all the same.
There were beautiful pictures in color every chapter, and a lovely layout.
The font was slightly larger, which I actually enjoyed. It made it easier to read. Togwotee Passage This story was a delightful account of one character’s incredible life journey, experiencing nature and new experiences to the fullest. The author has created something really unique that will appeal to a range of readers looking for a good adventure to get their teeth into. I particularly enjoyed the sprinkle of unexpected twists, and I’m sure all readers will too!

Reading this book was a pleasant experience, and I enjoyed following Calan’s story from being a curious young boy to a wise retired man with mountains of life experience. I loved how the natural world played a big part in the story, with each chapter as thought-provoking and captivating as the previous. I also liked how well readers get to know Calan as a person, and I found myself sharing his emotions when experiencing the good and the bad. The book doesn’t necessarily focus on a deeply developed plot, but is much more character driven, which really worked in its favour. The structure of this story is a mapping of the life of Calan in 1940’s Wyoming, from his childhood alongside a Native American tribe to the very end, where he comes full circle but from a new perspective.

Nominally a ‘slice-of-life’ story, following Calan and his best friend Derek through their daily routines and discussions, there are a lot of strong and overt themes underpinning everything that happens. We are constantly aware of the interplay between humanity and the natural world and of the importance of every individual striving to know more and do better.

Along the way, we get masses of information about nature and ecology, biodiversity and natural habitats, and lots of philosophical pondering about life and man’s place in it. Calan initially rejects most of the wisdom he learns about the balance of nature and life â€" as a child and teen he finds such things boring and irrelevant to him â€" but slowly learns through his own life experiences to appreciate the natural world and find his own balance with it, until he finally returns to the Native American beliefs and mythologies, at peace with the life he has led.

The story hops from one time in Calan’s life to the next, skipping months or years, not from one grand event to another, but simply showing his ordinary life at different ages and how he changes in some ways, while remaining essentially the same Calan we first met in others.

While not a lot happens in terms of the plot, the story is character-driven and focused on passing on Calan’s educational experiences to the reader, making it a worthy â€" if sometimes weighty â€" read, ideal for those looking for a serious, accessible narrative about environmental (and animal) preservation and a better balance with the natural world.

Togwotee Passage is not like anything I've read before. The book covers multiple decades of the main character Calan's life. Within a few pages, you instantly feel pity for the character and want him to succeed in life. L.G. Cullens does a good job of explaining the hard life Calan went through while also teaching about the balance of nature. It all comes full circle in the end and as a bonus, there is also some poetry and artwork throughout the story.
